More than just an indulgent food & wine experience, we offer guests the chance to unwind and explore until their heart’s content. Take some down time well spent enjoying the natural swimming pool or strolling around the extensive gardens and nearby mountain walks.
Sustainable tourism is our core value and to that end, we offer our guests only organic food and wines at all in-house meals. All ingredients that are not grown on the property are sourced from local suppliers and local small hold farmers involved in the Okm movement of the Catalan region.
We treat all our clients as VIP´s.
La Masia Alt Penedès
In 2016 we were lucky to find this beautiful gem of a masía nettled in the mountainous wine region of Penedès and we quickly set about giving the old girl a much-needed facelift and a breath of new life.
La Masía dates back to the 17th century and was originally the place where roof tiles were made for the local community. The original name ‘Forn Teuler’ means tile oven in Catalan and the original kiln oven still exists in the main house and has been converted into a spiral stairwell that showcases all the original stone work.
Being eco-friendly doesn’t mean guests have to compromise on creature comforts and La Masia Alt Penedès is now fitted out with all mod-cons to guarantee your time with us is an absolute pleasure.
La Masia sleeps up to eight adults with four double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, an open plan lounge and dining area with Bio-masa chimney, a seperate chillout room/siesta room and a fully equipped kitchen. All rooms have views of the gardens. La Masìa is not apt for children under the age of 18 years.
All in-house linens are quality Egyptian cotton. Pool towels, luxury bathrobes and slippers as well as bathroom amenities are provided at no extra cost.
The property also boasts a 100-metre squared converted old-barn kitchen and events room replete with a wood-fired oven, open fire place and space for up to 20 guests to dine. The events room and accommodation are skirted by extensive uncover patio areas and landscaped gardens where up to 60 guests can dine or enjoy cocktails al fresco. The events room also connects the front Mediterranean gardens with the zen garden located at the rear of the property where you can sit by the pond and watch the goldfish swim, or in the cooler months huddle around the fire pit with a cup of something in hand.

WATER – Our in-house water is sourced from the local village supply and is perfect both in taste and safety for drinking. We do not offer guests filtered still water as this water is as good as it gets! Our water in the garden is sourced from a large dam we have close to the property and is a mix of rain water and water from an underground mine. In the dryer months the dam is replenished with water coming from an underground source and is full of wonderful minerals that the plants and the pool’s ecosystem benefit from greatly.
HEATING – La Masia is mostly heated in winter using bio-masa both in the main boiler and the chimney in the guest house. Otherwise we use wood fired barbeques, wood-fired oven and open fire place in the old-barn kitchen conversion – this wood is sourced from the property and is gathered from the trees we need to fell every year for fire safety reasons. Every year we plant more fruit bearing trees to equal out the eco-system. In summer we turn the bio-masa off and rely 100% on solar energy to heat our water.
GARDEN – The land pertaining to La Masía includes 6 hectares of uninterrupted forest and mountain ranges. Beyond our property as far as the eye can see is also protected forestry land which cannot be constructed on. Our kitchen garden is 100% organic and brings a us plethora of goodies all year round. Our chickens are also fed only organic grain and left-overs from the kitchen garden and our girls roam free in a large outdoor enclosure to keep them safe from the local fox’s curiosity. In autumn of 2019 we plan to plant more olive trees and install bee hives so in 2020 we can include our own supply of olive oil and honey to the list of products we produce for our own consumption.
PRODUCTS – We do our best to not use single use plastics and are committed to going 100% plastic free within the next few years. We use sustainable cleaning products and offer guests organic toiletries.
NATURAL POOL - Our natural pool is 12 metres x 7 metres of crystal-clear waters with absolutely no chemicals or pollutants added. The depth of the pool, the plant life on its borders and the 4-tier filtering system of natural beads, sand, copper and UV lighting is what helps keep the water so pure. Bathing in a natural pool with dragon flies buzzing around is one of life’s unparalleled pleasures.
My name is Sophie Ruggles and I am your host and resident chef at BOCA BOCA and La Masia Alt Penedès.
In 2003 I took a leap of faith and moved with my husband Michael and daughter Ruby from Australia to Barcelona and within four short months I opened EMU BAR, Barcelona’s first and only Australasian eatery. The idea was to put a bit of fire into the bellies of my Mediterranean counterparts and the quirky little eatery quickly became known as the only place in Barcelona to get a taste of real spice. Four years later I closed the doors of Emu Bar to dedicate all my time to food writing.
In 2016 we left the wonderfully vibrant city of Barcelona in favour of a total tree change and moved to La Masia Alt Penedès. The century old building was in need of lots of love and care and after nearly two years of renovation, it is now our wonderful new old home.
